easier date coding & timeline
Addy Adelaine
As an action researcher I work with large data sets. Multiple events might happen on one day, with various sources associated to each event. I need to code numerous events over the period of two years. At present what I do is create an excell spreadsheet of all events and give each event a unique ref name then import into NVivo to create cases for each event. I can't do it by date as NVivo currently won't accept the fact that different events might have happened on the same day as the primary label needs to be unique. I create a case for every day of the project in case I recognise new data pertaining to a day in my analysis. When entered in NVivo the second and third columns showing date and event name aren't readily shown, so when I want to code against an event I go back to my excel spread sheet and search for the correct ref name. The whole process is a pain. I would like an easier way to create dated cases. E.g. a button to create an event case for each day over the period of a year or two. and for NVivo to accept that two things might happen in one day (have a second column for the event which distinguishes bnetween two cases on one day). What would be eaven greater is if NVivo automatically created a time line and you could serach the timeline for data pertaining to a date by clicking on a span of a visual timeline.

They didn't ask me yet a similar data view. But with the data that I have in storage I see a lot of potential in making a similar query for displaying different projects. Lots of people are involved and introducing data and timestamps must remain an easy job that leads to better visualisation.
Thanks for evaluating the possible additions to NVIVO.
